Town of Coon Newsletter – Spring 2007

Calendar of events –

April 3 - Election Day

April10 - Annual Meeting (7:30PM at the town hall)

April 20 & 21 - Spring Clean Up (8AM to 5PM daily)

Sand & Salt Shed –

At the budget meeting last fall it was decided that for the annual meeting this year the town board should take bids for a sand and salt shed. The building has concrete walls, wood frame top with metal roof, and blacktop floor and exterior mat. The building specs came from the Vernon County Highway Department. They have several of this type around the county. The Department of Transportation inspects all sand and salt sites. They are becoming more restrictive of sites without storage buildings.

The bids for this 96’ x 60’ structure totaled $145,000. Payments set up over a five year period would amount to about $35,000 per year. Exact figure will be available at the annual meeting. The first payment would be due in 2008.

Here’s how it would fit in the 2008 budget. In 2007 our road reconstruction loan payment is $124,000. The last payment on road reconstruction is in 2008 and it will be $76,000. The difference in those two is $48,000. We also make our last $18,000 payment on the loader in 2007. Payment on a shed would fit in as you can see.

Stray Animal Drop-off Site –

Stray animals in the Town of Coon are now dropped off at the Viroqua Veterinary Clinic on the north side of Viroqua. The Vernon County Dog Catcher will retrieve animals called in to the Sheriff’s Department. If you lose a pet you should call them to see if it’s there. The number is 637-2001.

Coon Creek Fire Fighting Association News –

Simon Fire Equipment of Farley, Iowa is constructing a new crew van. Reps from Coon Valley Fire & Rescue were in Farley recently to do a final inspection. All the compartments and shelving must be in place prior to painting. Delivery is expected some time in May. The new van should be on display at the Coon Valley Memorial Day parade.

Seal Coating for 2007 –

The roads scheduled for seal coating in 2007 is as follows: Lee Lane, Moilien Road, Valley View Estates Lane, Olson Lane, Hage Lane, Nelson Lane, Role Lane , Koula Lane, Ofte Lane, Leum Lane, Cornell Lane, Mathison Lane, Volden Road, Green Acres Road, Stenslien Lane, Nestingen Lane, Oak Lane, Tri State Road, Rainbow Drive, and Town Hall Lane. The total miles are approximately 8.40. The work should take place in June.

Town Website –

The Town of Coon website is as follows – www.tn.coon.wi.gov. Jan Ihle keeps the site up to date. This letter should be on there. Check it out.

Comprehensive Planning –

In February the Town of Coon Planning and Zoning Committees met with Danielle Oftedahl from the Vernon County Conservation Department. She is now in charge of finishing the planning grant. She’s got a lot of work ahead of her. The consultant has basically dropped out of the picture. Many people who were involved at the start have moved or retired. A lot of retraining has been required.

The Town of Coon Comprehensive plan has grown from three pages to twenty. By mid April the writing of the plan should be complete and it will be about 35 pages long. The planning grant has been a real pain.

A comprehensive plan is required by the state in order the Town of Coon to continue with zoning and local land use decisions. This was part of the 1999 state budget and the governor continues to insist that it is a good program. Time will tell.

Snow Storm of 2007 –

It wasn’t long ago we had a lot of snow to contend with. We all now know why the town needs a grader. It’s been many years since we had that much snow. Our workers are to be commended on a job well done. The equipment stood up very well. This snow was heavy so if there was a weakness it showed up. We had a few minor problems – broken hoses and a wing tube that collapsed. Good maintenance and experienced workers were the keys.

Neighboring towns weren’t as fortunate. Many of them had broken down graders and trucks.

Sincerely,

Town of Coon Board
